Lesson Plan- Ascension of the Lord (1st grade on up)



Ascension of the Lord


Objectives: The children will
- retell the story of The Ascension of the Lord
- identify how many days Jesus stayed after the Resurrection
- explain what Jesus wanted the disciples to do after He was gone
- identify where Jesus went and where He is seated



Review:
Prayer, Take Home Sheet, and vocabulary from last week’s lesson and also Objects Used at Mass cards.



Vocabulary Words: (Write words on the board and discuss with class)

Ascension- the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection
Resurrection- the bodily raising of Jesus Christ from the dead on the third day after he died on the cross
Baptize- when you are baptized it frees us from original sin and gives us new life in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit- the third Person of the Trinity who comes to us in Baptism and fills us with God’s life
Mass- our most important means of praying to God. At Mass we listen to God’s word, the Bible. We receive Jesus Christ in the bread and wine that has been blessed.
Bless- to bestow holiness on somebody or something
Gospel- means “Good News” and what good news the good news the gospel reading says



Plan:

Introduction: We celebrate Jesus going to heaven on Ascension Thursday (write it on the board). Ascension is the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection. This day comes 40 days after Easter. On Ascension Thursday we pray, sing, and rejoice with Jesus and all the angels and saints. We call it a holy day and celebrate it be participating in Mass. The gospel reading for that day is about the Ascension of Jesus.

Story: "The Ascension of the Lord" and ask questions from Take Home Sheet that will be sent home today.

Games:

Introduce game: What did Jesus want the disciples to do to the people? (To teach and baptize the ones who believed.)

Case of the Missing Person (Jesus Returns to Heaven)- In this game, kids will try to figure out who’s missing from the class. They’ll get an idea of how some people must have felt after Jesus returned to heaven. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry by Group Publishing, page 104.)


Play the game “Telephone” (use an empty cardboard paper towel roll). Start with today’s memory verse, then let the kids think of other Scriptures to pass around the circle. Talk about how we can share God’s Word with others.
