Lesson Plan- Joseph and His Wonderful Coat (1st grade on up)



Joseph and His Wonderful Coat


Objectives: The students will be able to
- retell the story Joseph and His Wonderful coat
- identify Joseph as one of Jacob’s twelve sons that was given a beautiful coat
- discuss that we should not be envious or jealous of other people’s things and we should be happy with the things we have
- explain that God want us to forgive others when someone does something wrong to us
- locate Canaan and Egypt on a map



Review:
Prayer, Take Home Sheet, and vocabulary from last week’s lesson and also Objects Used at Mass cards.



Vocabulary Words: (Write the bold words on the board and discuss with class)

harvest- a crop that is gathered during a certain season
grain- a small seed that is ground into flour to make bread
jealous- feeling bitter and unhappy because someone has something that you want
forgive- stop feeling angry about something someone did
Canaan- In the Hebrew Bible, the "Land of Canaan" extends from Lebanon southward across Gaza to the "Brook of Egypt" and eastward to the Jordan River Valley, thus including modern Israel and the Palestinian Territories (show students this on a map and have them locate it on a map)
Egypt- is a country mainly in North Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula forming a land bridge in Western Asia (show students this on a map and have them locate it on a map)



Plan:

Read story: "Joseph and His Wonderful Coat" and ask questions from Take Home Sheet that will be sent home today.

The Really Big Book of Bible Games By Gospel Light

Forgiveness Balloons (page 62)- We can celebrate the fact that God will always forgive us when we ask Him. His forgiveness helps us want to forgive others. Joseph forgave his brothers, even when they had treated him very badly. In Bible times God asked His people to think about their wrong actions during the 10 days now called the Days of Awe. We’ll play a game by trying to tap a balloon 10 times in a row.




These games are free, however they can only to be used for classroom and personal use. They may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit.


Joseph & His Brothers File Folder Game: Answer questions about Joseph & His Brothers and receive a bag of grain. The first person to collect 7 bags of grain (representing the 7 years of plenty), wins.


Directions- Print out Directions, cut it out, and glue on front of file folder. Title is in Edda font and text is in Tempus Sans ITC.) (Younger students can answer a question for a sack of grain or just receive one for landing on the space.)

Game Board- Print out Game Board, trim and glue on the inside of the file folder. Make sure the directions are on the front of the file folder. Laminate or cover file folder with clear contact paper to make it last. (Title is in Edda font and START is in Harrington.)

Question Cards- Print Question Cards out on card stock. Cut out Question Cards. Laminate or cover with clear contact paper to make them last. (Use only the cards that reflect your student’s abilities.) Questions are in MS Word and can be changed easily to whatever you want. Feel free to change the questions or use your own. (Questions are in Tempus Sans ITC font.)

Sacks of Grain Cards- Make several copies of the token cards on card stock. Cut out token cards. Laminate or cover with clear contact paper to make them last.



Joseph And His Coat Of Many Colors (card game)

This is a variation on the popular game of UNO with cards depicting the colored coat of Joseph. Players are trying to empty their hands of cards by playing them to a common pile, matching cards by color, number, or action. The deck is made up of 4 sets of differently colored cards with numbers from 1 to 8. There are also 4 Wild cards, 4 Draw 2 cards, 4 Skip cards, and 4 Reverse. (I wanted to buy this game, but could not find it so I made one.)


Directions

Print 1 copy of each of the Game Cards out on card stock. Cut out Game Cards. Laminate or cover with clear contact paper to make them last.
