What Commandment is it?

Directions: Tell the students a sin and have them tell you what commandment it broke.






Ten Commandments Memory Game (Catholic)- Cards are laid out in a grid face down, and players take turns flipping pairs of cards over. On each turn, the player will first turn one card over, then a second. If the two cards match, the player scores one point, the two cards are removed from the game, and the player gets another turn. If they do not match, the cards are turned back over.

The object is to match more pairs of cards than the opposing player. (One point is scored for each matched pair, and the player with the highest score after all cards have been matched wins.) When cards are turned over, it is important to remember where they are for when the matching card is turned up later in the game.






Ten Commandments File Folder Game: The objective of the game is to identify which one of the Ten Commandments the sin broke.


Introduction: What are sins? Breaking God’s law. What are God’s laws? The Ten Commandments. So what are the Ten Commandments? They are laws from God that we must always keep.

Players place their marker on START. The players roll the dice and follow the directions on the space they land on. If they land on a “?”, the player to their right draws a card and reads the question out loud (only use the questions that are age appropriate for your students). On each card is a question about sins and the player must tell which commandment the sin broke (they may say the commandment number or the commandment). Younger students can say whether or not it is a sin and why. If they answer correctly, they receive 1 token (milk caps, poker chips, etc.). If they are not correct, they do not receive one. When a player gets to the end of one game board, they keep going on the second game board and continue to FINISH. All players must land on FINISH with the exact number. When the player reaches FINISH they will count their tokens. After all players have made it to FINISH, the player with the most tokens wins.

Introduction: Coveting means wanting something really bad. It includes jealousy, but also taking things from other people, or ruining them so they can’t have them. We can do this with people—have you ever heard people say, “He’s my friend, he can’t be yours!” Or with property—for example, you might be angry at your brother and don’t want him to have the last cookie, so you eat it or hide it on him. Coveting is a way of being mean. It starts in our thoughts when we judge others. Preparation: Mix a drop of blue food coloring and the cup of water in a resealable plastic bag.

Say: Mandy had a problem. She had borrowed her sister's china animals for Show and Tell without asking anyone. On the way home, Mandy dropped the bag of animals. Every miniature animal was shattered. Mandy swept all the broken pieces back into the bag and hid it under her bed before her sister got home. When her mom asked her what she used for Show and Tell, Mandy told her mom that she showed the class her seashells.

Ask: What did Mandy say that she brought to class?

Write "seashells" in orange on the paper. Have each child scribble over the word "seashells" with the blue crayon. Tell children that the blue marks they make are like the lies Mandy told to cover up what she had done. While each child is scribbling, ask him or her why Mandy lied.
After each child has had a turn, say: "Mandy took her sister's animals and broke them. Then she lied to cover up her mistake. We often lie to hide another sin, just as the word "seashells" is hiding under the marks you made. But God has very special eyes. He can see right through our lies.

Take the bag of blue water, and lay it over the paper. Let the kids see the words pop out.
Read Genesis 18:15 and ask:

Why did Sarah lie?
How is that like Mandy's problem?
How are the marks we made with blue crayons like Mandy's lie?
What can you do if you are afraid to tell the truth?

Say: Mandy lied about the animals because she was afraid of the consequences from breaking them. "Consequences" means what happens to you for doing something. Mandy will have to suffer the consequences of breaking the animals and now also for lying. If you lie, you need to be truthful as soon as possible. God can see through all our lies anyway! Most people will be happy to forgive you. It's always best to tell the truth

Introduction to game- To bear false witness means to not tell the whole truth. It is lying, but it is much more than lying. We lie to either make ourselves look good (and this is called pride) or sometimes to make others look bad. Sometimes we lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes it’s so easy to lie that we didn’t even realize we lied! The truth is very important because we need to be able to trust each other and understand each other. We need to guard what we say, and say what we mean by speaking the truth.

What’s Missing?

Need: Several common small objects

Directions: Place several small objects on a tray or table in front of the students where they all can see (number of objects that are age appropriate). Have the students name each object as you point to them. Students hide their eyes while the teacher removes one object. Then the students look and guess which object is missing. Who ever guesses right gets to remove an object and have everyone guess "What's Missing".




Thief!: Players are given situations and they must identify whether or not they are breaking the 7th Commandment. They also must state what they are obliged to do for their sin.



Introduction: Stealing is taking something that does not belong to you without asking. It is not borrowing, or finding something, or owning something, or having something with permission. It is taking something from someone else. Besides stealing, the seventh commandment forbids cheating, keeping things that are not ours, and accepting bribes by public officials.

We are commanded by the seventh commandment to respect what belongs to others, to live up to our business agreements, to pay our just debts and to not charge an exorbitant rate of interest when lending to another. We must also use the things we have wisely and treat our things with respect. In addition, this commandment includes that we do not keep others from having what they deserve or borrow things and not returning them.

Introduction: We are to love God above all things. We cannot value money, power, TV, music, video games, homework, friends or other things before our relationship with God. Can you put God first in your life?


Directions: Four cards are dealt to each player if three to six players are involved. With only two players, five cards are dealt to each. All remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile. Randomly choose a player to go first. On your turn, ask for a specific card. You must already hold one of these cards. For example: "Charlie, please give me the cell phone." If Charlie has it, he gives it to you and you go again. Otherwise, he says "Go Fish" and you draw from the draw pile. If you happen to draw the card you asked for, you get another turn. If you draw anything else, it is now the next player's turn. When you collect both cards, immediately show the set to the other players and place the cards face up in front of you. When the draw pile runs out, keep playing until all of the cards have been made into sets of two. When the draw pile is exhausted, no one says "Go Fish." If you ask someone for a card she doesn't have, it becomes her turn. The first player who runs out of cards says, “I love God above all things” and is declared the winner.

Honor Your Parents Game- A simple game for preschool through first grade to have them tell why they love their parents.

Need: 1 sponge

Directions: Cut the sponge into a large heart. Have the students sit in a circle. The teacher turns her back to the students and she says, "Pass, pass, pass." The students then pass the heart to their right around the circle. When the teacher says, "Stop," the child holding the heart has to say a reason why they love their parents.





8 pages of cards

Back Talk (4th Commandment)- The object of this game is for the children to honor their parent’s requests in the proper way. Print out the three sets of cards. One set is what a parent would say to their child (these cards are in red). Another set is a disrespectful response from a child to the parent. Another set of cards is what the child should say to their parent. Shuffle the cards and deal them completely out. Have the players put their cards face up in from of them so that others can see and read their cards and help them if necessary. By taking turns, have one player start with what a parent would say and read it out loud. After they have read the card, they place it in the middle of the table face up. The rest of the players then check their cards to see if they have one that says what a disrespectful child would say to their parent in response in this situation. If they have the card, they read it out loud and place it face up next to the first card. Then the players look at their cards to see if they have what a child should say to their parent. If they have the card, they read it out loud and place it face up next to the second card. Players can also play in teams so they can help each other answer the questions.







Honor Your Father and Mother (4th Commandment)- God says to “Honor your father and mother”. Honoring your father and mother means respecting and obeying them because they are very important people. Place your markers on the "START” space. The players roll a die and follow the directions on the space they land on. When a player lands on the picture of the family, they must state a reason why their parents are important. Example: “I honor my parents because they take care of me.” The first player to “FINISH” wins.






Skit:

Have the students make up a skit and act it out. It can be about honoring your mother and father or not. They can also do alternative endings to their skit where the students did honor their parents.

Potty Mouth: Using the Lord’s name in vain is like fingernails scrapping down a chalkboard. God hears us when we take his name in vain and it must break his heart when his name is used in such a manner. This game focuses on how we sometimes do not have respect for God and God’s name.



Place your marker on START. Players roll the die and move their marker that many spaces indicated on the die. If you land on the picture of a toilet plunger, things have backed up and you must back up 2 spaces. Land on the toilet paper, you lose a turn. If you land on the picture of the toilet brush the player to your left draws a card and reads it out loud. On each card is a question about the 2nd commandment: Thou shall not use the Lord’s name in vain (Catholic). If you answer the question correctly, you stay where you are. If you are not correct, you must move to the urinal for having a potty mouth. On your next turn you are asked another question and you cannot move off the urinal until you answer a question correctly. If you answer a question correctly, you may resume your position on the game board. If a player lands on a picture of a toilet bowl cleaner, they must change places with the player that is positioned last on the game board. The first player to FINISH wins.

What ever happened to good manners in church?- Find out if you know how to behave in church. Roll the die and move that many spaces. Follow the directions on the space you land on. If the space has a Roll Play activity on it, perform it to the best of your ability. If needed, the teacher will help you understand what to do and coach you how to do it correctly. If the space has a picture of person reacting to bad behavior that they had just seen in church, draw a Game Card and read it out loud (if the student cannot read, the teacher or someone can read it for them). Answer the question to the best of your ability (the teacher can coach the student if necessary).

Are You Ready To Clean Up Your Act?- We're kidding ourselves, and we know it. And yet we carry on – thinking we are following all the commandments and meanwhile making up our own rules. Why is it so hard for people to follow the 6th commandment: Thou shall not commit adultery (Catholic)? It is harder than you think or is it? In this game players must answer correctly questions about the 6th commandment or they are sent to the bathtub to clean up their act.





Place your marker on START. Players spin the spinner and follow the directions. If you land on the picture of the bar of soap the player to your left draws a card and reads it out loud. On each card is a question about the 6th commandment. If you answer the question correctly, you stay where you are. If you are not correct, you must move to the bathtub and clean up your act. On your next turn you are asked another question and you cannot get out of the bathtub until you answer a question correctly. If you answer a question correctly, you may resume your position on the game board. If a player lands on a rubber duck, they may change places with the leader. The first player to FINISH wins.
