I have just finished reading about half of the responses to this week's Random Dozen, and my mind is blown. First it reeled, then it blew. And that is a sentence I never thought I'd say.
I'm going to attempt to answer the questions now, but any hope of having a unique, interesting answer is shot because of your amazing answers.
You remember that old Paul Simon song, "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover?" All I can think of now is "Fifty Ways to Eat a Peanut Butter Sandwich."
Also, many, many more of us have more creative ideas about how to watch a movie than we do about our own funerals.
Just think, God hears all of our random thoughts all the time, and it never freaks him out or wears him out.
How's that for random.
1. Tell me the absolute best way to watch a movie.
A) In a theater with my girlfriends.
B) At home, with closed captioning on. I'm hard of hearing. At home, I must also have something to do, like fold laundry. Can't just sit there, no matter how much I like the movie. Even a crossword will work.
2. Do you ever think about your own funeral? If so, do you have specific ideas about how you would like it to be?
My favorite answer to this one came from a brand new blogger: "Yes, a long time from now." That cracked me up. I happen to know this blogger in real life. Her name is Julie at Love Blossoms and you should go visit her (please?) and say hi. She is going to be a natural blogger. And she is a supremely nice, Christ-like person who is down to earth with a great sense of humor.
As for me and my answer, it is definitely yes. I have been planning it all of my adult life. It's the last chance to say anything to people. I'd like to be cremated, too. I never want people to remember how I looked dead; I want them to remember me laughing. I have some songs, etc. chosen. Gee. Do you think I should write my own eulogy?? Ha. That's a joke.
3. Are you more of a giver or a taker?
No, let me ask YOU a question (Whut?): What kind of person writes a meme question which she knows, if she herself answers honestly, will make her look bad?
I'm a taker. Seriously, I don't like that about myself. Some of it comes from being the baby of the family. Some of it comes from having an indulgent husband. You know those bumper stickers that say, "God isn't finished with me yet?" I need one on my forehead.
4. Vacations: planned activities and schedules, or play it by ear?
The last one was play it by ear, and now I have seen the light. The no plan is the best plan for me.
5. What is
A) Windows
B) Vent at bottom of refrigerator
C) Cup in the middle of the washing machine for fabric softener
D) Insides of trash cans
6. Name a cause that means a lot to you.
Pro Life, whether the unborn or those unable to speak for themselves like Terri Schaivo
Fresh water to drink around the world
7. Do you eat a regular old peanut butter jelly sandwich, or do you customize it? And by the way, jelly or no jelly?
"Slip out the back, Jack. Make a new plan, Stan."
Uh, no. That's not it.
I LOVE peanut butter, as much as I love chocolate.
When I was little, my mom packed it every single day for lunch. With jelly.
I never met a peanut butter sandwich I didn't like.
Currently, I eat a low-fat version with no jelly.
8. If we were having a conversation in person, how would I know if you were nervous?
I have trouble with eye contact even when I'm not nervous. It's a defense mechanism. I guess it's "If I can't see you, you can't hurt me." So when I'm nervous, I hardly make it at all. And I pick at my cuticles.
9. Do you have an elaborate bedtime routine, or just the basics of tooth brushing and jammies?
Just the usual, except I do have to make sure I have tissues and a back scratcher nearby. I have terrible itchy back issues. Sometimes I bolt upright in the middle of the night and grab my PAINT STIRER off my nightstand and scratch like a maniac. It is the right length and texture. I've often wondered if I die if people will come into my home to get things in order and wonder about the paint stick on the nightstand. But if they really know me, they will just shrug their shoulders and get on with it.
10. Have you ever regretted something you wrote on your blog?
Yes, about a year into it (this is my fourth year) I wrote a scathing post on a guy named Barack Obama before hardly anyone knew who he was. I actually believe I coined the term "Obamination," but most people would not believe that. Then I decided I didn't want to be too political and removed it. After all, I reasoned, he's not a real threat; we would never elect somebody that liberal. And no one would ever pay for water in a bottle when it comes out your faucet, either.
11. Has anyone ever told you that you look like a famous person or celebrity? Did you agree?
Oh man. Yes.
A) Sandi Patti
B) Meryl Streep
C) Helen Hunt
D) A teacher at the high school, who is not famous, but tons of people are telling me this.
I think I resemble Helen Hunt a bit, but my yes are bigger. But I have Meryl's nose. So I think I'm kind of like Helen Streep. On a good day, Ted Koppel.
12. If you were going to dedicate a song to a loved one or friend, what would the song be and to whom would it be dedicated?
My heart is tender this week.
Matt Redman's You Never Let Go, for my friend, Jim.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Your perfect love is casting out fear
And even when I’m caught in the middle of the storms of this life
I won’t turn back
I know You are near
And I will fear no evil
For my God is with me
And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?
Chorus:
Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me
And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
We’ll live to know You here on the earth
Chorus:
Yes, I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
Still I will praise You, still I will praise You
Comin' around to read the rest of you today. You're the BEST!
