Gallup: Americans Far More Concerned About Big Government Than Big Business

By Susan Duclos

• • In your opinion, which of the following will be the biggest threat to the country in the future... big business, big labor, or big government?

One chart says it all.

Gallup

64 percent believe big government, which has gotten far bigger over the last three years, especially with Obamacare being passed by Obama and Democrats when they controlled the House of Representatives, Senate and the White House, is a bigger threat to the country in the future.

Only 26 percent feel big business in the bigger threat and just 8 percent said big labor.

More concerning to Democratic leaders and Obama should be the Gallup finding a little farther down in the report.

While top Democratic leaders and Obama continue to try to grow big government bigger, Democratic voters are starting to fear big government more and more.

Since 2009, there has been a 16 percentage point increase in Democrats believing "big government is the biggest threat to the nation." In 2009 that number was only 32 percent, now it is 48 percent.

Gallup's bottom line:

Americans' concerns about the threat of big government are near record-high levels. The Occupy Wall Street movement, focused on "fighting back against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations," has drawn much attention and a large following. Still, the majority of Americans do not view big business as the greatest threat to the country when asked to choose among big business, big government, and big labor. In fact, Americans' concerns about big business have declined significantly since 2009.

Over the last few decades Democratic and Republican lawmakers have been guilty of expanding government but in the 2010 midterm elections, GOP politicians were handed control of the House of Representatives and given a net gain in Senate seats, because they campaigned and promised to spend less, fight tax increases, and limit big government expansions.

They have fought to keep those promises in the last year and Conservative voters have held their feet to the fire to make sure they continue to do so.

Democratic leaders, led by Obama, continue to try to raise taxes and push for more stimulus aka government spending or "investment", showing they did not learn the lesson of the 2010 midterms or simply chose to ignore it.

The White House has raised the stakes in the negotiations over the renewal of $200bn in stimulus measures for the US economy, seeking to link their fate to separate legislation to fund the government.

The move by Barack Obama, the president, marks a high-risk attempt to corral Republicans into a compromise in Washington’s end-of-year fiscal warfare, since it increases the odds that some federal agencies could shut down as early as Saturday.

The White House has been pressing Congress for months to pass an extension of payroll tax cuts and emergency jobless benefits that are due to expire at the end of the month, on the grounds that if they lapsed it would do serious damage to the US economy.

Republicans have accepted the need to preserve these forms of stimulus in 2012. But the bill they proposed – and will be voting on Tuesday in the House of Representatives – does so in a way that the White House and many congressional Democrats reject. It pays for the measures by curbing the pay of federal workers, rather than imposing higher taxes on wealthy Americans as Democrats want. It also includes several other provisions – primarily an expedited approval process for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline project – that Democrats are opposed to.

The Obama experiment has failed. It is time for Democratic lawmakers to start listening to the people they are supposed to be representing and stop pushing for bigger government or they risk losing control of the Senate and the White House in November 2012.

Video- "New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone."

By Susan Duclos

Video below:

A west Georgia business owner is stirring up controversy with signs he posted on his company's trucks, for all to see as the trucks roll up and down roads, highways and interstates:

"New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone."

"Can't afford it," explained the employer, Bill Looman, Tuesday evening. "I've got people that I want to hire now, but I just can't afford it. And I don't foresee that I'll be able to afford it unless some things change in D.C."

Looman's company is U.S. Cranes, LLC. He said he put up the signs, and first posted pictures of the signs on his personal Facebook page, six months ago, and he said he received mostly positive reaction from people, "about 20-to-one positive."

Celebrating Bead Heaven

I have to share with you the launch of this beautiful bead store, which is the heartfelt effort for our dear friends Andrew and Sherry. Justin and Andrew have been friends since they were in junior high. I can guarantee you that if anyone suggested at that time that Andrew would own and run a bead shop, there would have been some serious laughing going on! But here it is - a beautiful space of colour and creativity: Bead Heaven.

It is always inspiring and exciting to see someone put their heart and their work out in the world, to see people find the courage and wherewithal to share their gifts and create something in the world. It's something to celebrate! Congratulations, Andy and Sherry.

Bead Heaven sell beads, offers classes and will also feature the work of local artisans. Until the end of June, they're having an opening sale featuring 20% off of everything.
If you're in Toronto, check them out at 569 St.Clair Ave. West, west of Bathurst. You can also visit their website at www.beadheaven.ca or find them on Facebook.

Be sure to say hi to Andy for me :)

The (not so) Serious Business of an Art Picnic

Every 2 weeks I meet with a great group of creative women entrepreneurs in my 'hood. We're there to encourage and support one another as we face the challenges of our various businesses. We celebrate our successes, talk through fears and struggles, share resources and strategies. It's invaluable! One of the things that totally amped up the power and connection of the group was when we turned our coffee meetings into art picnics.

What's an art picnic? In January, I interviewed the ever-inspiring artist Leah Piken Kolidas of Creative Every Day for a series of interviews with highly creative bloggers that became the e-collection Your Creative Spark. One of the things Leah shared was her concept of art picnics - getting down on the floor, spreading out your art goodies and letting yourself play!

I mentioned this to the group; eyes brightened, ears perked up, and we gave it a try. Everyone brings a few things to the table at the coffee shop we've set up as home. Magazines, scissors, envelopes, stickers, origami paper, book pages, magnets, inspiring Yogi tea tags, everywhere. And we cut and paste... or not. We chat. We laugh. We get teary. Amidst the creative activity, we ask each other, "How do you deal with..." "Do you know anybody who..." "What do you think about..." And somehow, amidst the play, the conversation is easier, the pressure less and the flow so easy and natural.

And if you have an upcoming meeting of some kind, whether it's for work or business or volunteering or your community, why not bring a few art supplies and see what happens? See what a little creativity can do to the tone, the content and the progress of the meeting. I'd love to hear what it's like for you - and I bet Leah would too!

If you'd like to experience an art picnic for yourself, Leah leads Virtual Art Picnics. She's a wonderfully encouraging, gentle leader and is sure to create a safe and supportive space for your creative exploration. Her next Virtual Art Picnic is June 17th. You can find out more about it here.

What would happen if you brought your creativity with you everywhere? (PS. You do)

Authentic Professionalism (TM)

What would it be like if you could still be yourself while being a professional? Do you think it's possible? What images are conjured by the word "professional"? Anything you want to be?

These are questions I explored when creating Authentic Professionalism (TM) in response to a request from the wonderful Danette Relic. Danette is a part of a rocking group of woman, including hoopdance instructor Allison Tarr and massage therapist Michelle Yee, who refer to themselves as a Power Pod. These women are vibrant, creative, loving and full of kick. They regularly meet and support each other in pursuit of their dreams. Danette asked me if I would talk to them about professionalism, a topic that kept coming up at their meetings.

The more I thought about it, the more inspired I became. I wanted to create something that would help these women and other creative independents define themselves as professionals in a way that they could really get behind. Instead of a boring definition full of "shoulds," what would it be like to create an authentic professional code that represented who you are and what you want to bring to your work? What would it be like to have an authentic professional code that would serve both as inspiration and also as a guidance system en route to your dreams?

There is an oppressive myth out there that in order to be taken seriously, to be successful, to make money, to be professional, (feel free to add your own words), you must fit a particular mould, do things a certain way. And if you're an independent spirit, a creative being inspired to start your own business, build your own practice, share your own creations, I know one thing -- you didn't choose that path because you wanted to do things just like everyone else. The beautiful thing is that each part of the process can be a part of your self-discovery and self-expression.

When I worked through the Authentic Professionalism (TM) process, I was surprised to find that one of my professional standards is "style." Seeing that helped me define my priorities and understand how deeply committed I am to my business being a work of creative self-expression. If you were to create your own unique set of professional standards, what would they be? What can you get behind?
