I Love God Above All Things

Need: Paper plates, markers or crayons, paper punch, and yarn.

Directions: Give each child a paper plate on which you have written the words on the bottom of the plate: loves God above all things. Have each child write their name at the top of the plate (write their names if they need help). Then have them draw pictures of themselves below their name (in the middle of the paper plate) and decorate the plate using the crayons or markers (glitter would add that special touch). Punch a hole in the center top of each plate and add a piece of yarn to hang.

Ten Commandments Memory Game (Catholic)


Directions: Cards are laid out in a grid face down, and players take turns flipping pairs of cards over. On each turn, the player will first turn one card over, then a second. If the two cards match, the player scores one point, the two cards are removed from the game, and the player gets another turn. If they do not match, the cards are turned back over.

The object is to match more pairs of cards than the opposing player. (One point is scored for each matched pair, and the player with the highest score after all cards have been matched wins.) When cards are turned over, it is important to remember where they are for when the matching card is turned up later in the game.

*The name Ahasuerus is equivalent to his Greek name of Xerxes, both deriving from the Old Persian language Khashayarsha.

Circle Time:

Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrating the salvation of the Persian Jews from Haman’s evil plot to have them all killed. It is tradition to use noise makers (gragger as they are called in Hebrew) to make as much noise as possible whenever Haman’s name is mentioned when you read the story. The purpose is to stamp down or blot out Haman’s name which comes from the book of Deuteronomy which says, “You shall blot out the memory of the Amalekites (Haman’s people) from under the heavens.” Encourage the children to boo or hiss when the name of Haman is mentioned and cheer when Esther and Mordecai are mentioned.

*Have the children say “X” whenever King Xerxes is mentioned for added fun.


Read story: “Queen Esther” from your own story book.

Then ask questions from below.

What was the name of the girl? Esther

Was Esther Persian or Jewish? Jewish

What was the name of Esther’s cousin? Mordecai

What was the king’s name? Xerxes

Was King Xerxes Persian or Jewish? Persian

What did Mordecai warn Esther many times never to do? Never to tell anyone she was Jewish and not a Persian girl.

What did Esther become? Queen

Why did King Xerxes choose Esther to be his new queen? Because Esther was beautiful.

Mordecai heard about two men plotting to kill King Xerxes. How did Mordecai warn King Xerxes? He had Esther tell him.

Haman was an important man. Why was he so mad at Mordecai? Mordecai would not bow down to him. Mordecai would only bow down to God.

Who planned to have all the Jews killed? Haman

What lie did Haman tell King Xerxes so he would allow him to kill all the Jews? Haman told King Xerxes that the Jews did not respect him or his laws.

Why couldn’t Esther see King Xerxes whenever she wanted to? She has to wait for King Xerxes to invite her.

What could happen to Esther if she went to King Xerxes without permission? He may become angry and have her killed.

How did Esther get to see King Xerxes? She invited him to dinner.

What did Esther do to save her people? She asked King Xerxes to save her people.

Was Esther was courageous and obedient? Yes. How was she courageous and obedient? She faced her fears to save her people. She did what her cousin told her to do.

Can you name some ways to be obedient even when it is difficult? (Example: You come home from school and your friends want you to come out and play. You have chores you must do before you can play. What do you do?)

Throwing Sponges At Haman

Paint a backboard with a Haman face. Players try to hit the face with wet sponges.


Pop Haman

Blow up balloons and draw "Haman" faces on them. Attach the balloons to a backboard such as drywall or thick Styrofoam. Players try to "pop Haman" with darts



Introduce game: What was the king’s name? Xerxes

Play the game called "If I Were King or Queen". Children sit in a circle and tell what they would do if they were King or Queen.



Pin the Crown on King Xerxes

Draw a picture of King Xerxes’ head. Make crowns. Blindfold children and have them try to pin the crown on King Xerxes’ head.





Xerxes- Be the first player to collect 4 Xerxes cards and win!



Directions: Place the Xerxes cards near the game board. Each player places a marker on “START”. Players take turns rolling the die and moving clockwise the number of spaces rolled on the die. Players follow the directions on the space they land on. If a player lands on a picture of a crown that player takes a Xerxes card. If a player lands on “LOSE A CARD”, they must put one of their Xerxes cards back into the pile. If a player lands on a picture of Haman all players boo and hiss. The player that landed on Haman gets to take a Xerxes card from any player they choose. If you land on LOSE A TURN you lose your next turn. When a player has collected four Xerxes cards, that player is the winner.



Optional: Play may continue until every player collects the four Xerxes cards.

Decorate with ribbon (weaving is a great activity for 3's and 4's!) and fill with colorful tissue paper and treats! The children are always excited to exchange their baskets!

Grace Before Meals 3-D Picture- Students make a placemat any way they like using a large piece of construction paper 18 X 12”and other craft supplies. Then glue a napkin, silverware, plate, and a plastic cup on it like a place setting. Students then glue the Grace Before Meals prayer on the plate.

*After my students make their placemats I asked them, “How do we set a table?” We then do it slowly step-by-step making the craft (I have the students glue the prayer on the plate later) so hopefully they can help out at home setting the table.

I then say to my students: Do any of you say “grace” or thank God before you eat your meals? Do any of you have a “standard” grace you say at home? (Give a few examples.) Why do we say grace? Is it important? Why?

Sometimes we can easily forget to thank the Lord for all He has given to us. Uzziah forgot to thank God. A great way to remember to thank God is to always pray to Him to thank Him for the food He gives us to eat each day.

We have lots to be thankful for. Let’s not forget to say thank you to God.

Thank you God for - in this game, children sit in a circle and pass the beanbag to each other, whoever is holding the beanbag says "thank you God for ______" and then says something they are thankful for and passes the beanbag to someone else. Encourage children to give everyone a turn with the beanbag and not just pass it back and forth to the friends next to them. Also, when children say something, never criticize what they are thankful for. Preschool aged children often think of things we forget about/take for granted from pets to pillows, to their beds to thank God for.

Who Gave Thanks To God: (card game) Are you thankful to God? Here is a fun game about Biblical characters that are thankful to God.



The object of the game is to match more pairs of cards than the opposing player(s). On each turn, the player will turn over two cards (one at a time) and will read them out loud (or someone else can read the cards for them). The player keeps them if they match (the question card is answered correctly by matching it with the proper picture card). The cards are color coded to avoid confusion of which pair of cards match (each matching pair shares the same text box color). If the player successfully match a pair of cards, that player also gets to take another turn. When a player turns over two cards that do not go together, those cards are turned face down again where they were found and it becomes the next player’s turn.



Introduce game: Uzziah became prideful and forgot about God. He thought other things were more important, like himself.

I Love God Above All Things: is played with a deck of cards with pictures of various objects on them. The purpose of this game is see if you can "lose" all of your objects (cards) that you have valued over God.

Introduction: We are to love God above all things. We cannot value money, power, TV, music, video games, homework, friends or other things before our relationship with God. Can you put God first in your life?


Directions: Four cards are dealt to each player if three to six players are involved. With only two players, five cards are dealt to each. All remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile. Randomly choose a player to go first. On your turn, ask for a specific card. You must already hold one of these cards. For example: "Charlie, please give me the cell phone." If Charlie has it, he gives it to you and you go again. Otherwise, he says "Go Fish" and you draw from the draw pile. If you happen to draw the card you asked for, you get another turn. If you draw anything else, it is now the next player's turn. When you collect both cards, immediately show the set to the other players and place the cards face up in front of you. When the draw pile runs out, keep playing until all of the cards have been made into sets of two. When the draw pile is exhausted, no one says "Go Fish." If you ask someone for a card she doesn't have, it becomes her turn. The first player who runs out of cards says, “I love God above all things” and is declared the winner.

Introduce snack: We need to be thankful to God for giving us our basic needs. As in the prayer we just learned, we are thankful for the gifts we are about to receive.

Climb Mount Sinai File Folder Game: Be the first to climb Mount Sinai and win!

Directions: The objective of the game is to be the first to climb to the top of Mount Sinai. The players roll a die and follow the directions on the space they land on. If the player lands on a space that is already occupied by another, BUMP that player back to the START space. The first player to the top of Mount Sinai (FINISH) wins. Continue playing to find out who comes in second, third, fourth, etc. place.

Crossing the Red Sea

Materials: Bed Sheet

Directions: Two adults hold the four corners of the sheet as it rests on the floor in front of the children. The children line up single file at one side of the sheet. The first child in line will play the part of Moses and stretch out his hand. Once the first child in line has stretched out his hand, the adults will quickly raise the sheet high above their heads. As the sheet parachutes above them, the children will run under the sheet to the other side. If children are under the sheet when it comes down, they are out of the game. Have children take turns being the first one in line and playing the part of Moses.

Directions: Divide the class into groups. Have one group play one game and the other plays another, etc. Students must do what the toy tells them to do. Change games after all students get a chance to play.

Outrageous Desert Obstacle Course

Set up an obstacle course that the students must do the crab walk backwards through it. Have them crab walk around objects, go under the table, carry a ball on their stomach and put it into the trash can, etc. Demonstrate what you want the students to do.


Another version:

Introduce game: Do you think it was easy to walk in the desert? Let’s find out.

Supply list: one table, one chair

Set up your obstacle course as described in your instructions and have the children watch you walk through the obstacle course before they try it themselves. As you go through each stage, explain what it represents.

Say: First, you’ll hop on one foot because the sand is so hot. Next, you will crawl under a table to get away from the sun. Then you roll on the ground from exhaustion. Finally, you crawl to a chair to rest.

Have the children go through the obstacle course, resetting it for each child as needed.



Introduce game: What did the Israelites see day in and day out on the desert? Sand

Pass the Sand!

Divide the group into two teams and line them up. Have the first team players in line grab a handful of sand from a container. They must pass the sand to the next player, who passes it to the next player, and so on down the line. When the sand reaches the last player, she pours what's left of it onto a plate. The team with the most sand at the end of the relay wins the game. You may have to weigh the sand on a food scale to find out if it's close!

Crafts:

Introduce craft: What hopped out of the Nile River and into all the Egyptian houses?


Frog

Need: Paper plates, white and red construction paper, crayons, glue

Directions: Pre cut tongue for students out of red construction paper. Have the tongue about one inch wide and twelve inches long. Have students color paper plate green on one side and fold plate in half. (Note: Be sure to have students use old crayons and peel the paper off of crayons and rub the side of the crayon on the paper plate instead of coloring it. This will be a lot faster and easier for the students). Students then cut out two eyes that are pre drawn on white construction paper (round circles that are at least three inches across) and color eyes. Glue on eyes on outside of frog (green side) on the top of the paper plate that is folded in half. Have the eyes halfway on and halfway hanging off the fold near the center. Glue tongue inside the frog’s mouth starting from the center of the fold and out the front of the mouth. Curl tongue with pencil and draw a bug on end of tongue if you wish.

Follow Moses

Need: A large walking stick

Directions: Someone is the Leader (Moses) and carries a stick for his staff. Students follow Moses and do what Moses does. (Like Follow the Leader).



Introduce game: How many plagues happened when the Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go?


Plagues Cards for Memory, Go Fish and Sequencing. Print out 2 copies, cut out, laminate or cover with clear contact paper to make them last. (All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on this game are not my own and are from various internet sources.)

Leaping Frogs File Folder Game: The object of the game is for the player (the frog) to get to the Pharaoh’s Palace first. The players roll a die and follow the directions on the space they landed on. If the player lands on a space that is already occupied by another, BUMP that player back to the START space. The first frog to the Pharaoh’s Palace wins.

How much was it worth? Less than a penny.

Why did Jesus especially appreciate the Widow’s gift of coins? Jesus liked the way the widow gave all she had from the heart. He saw her great faith in God and the church’s work. Jesus appreciated how she gave what she had without grumbling or showing off.

What can people give to the church instead of money? People can make large or small sacrifices of time. People can do community service which is helping others at church and out in the community.

Does this story mean a small gift is always better than a large gift? Give what you can to help others and the church. It doesn’t matter who much or how little, but give from the heart.

What things do we (or our parents) give to the church? Things: money, time, food for the poor, coats and clothes for people who need them, etc.

What is the money given to the church used for? Missionaries, charities, running the church, church maintenance, food for the poor, etc.

Tithing: A simple game to help reinforce tithing to young children.


Introduction: Tithing is our contribution to the support of the Church which some people call an offering. The Church uses that money to help pay for the Church expenses and contributions for the community and around the world.

Directions: Give each player 5 tokens (play money, poker chips, milk caps, etc.) to represent their tithing (money that they have put aside to give to the Church). Put one small basket on the table to put the donations in. Place your marker on any space on the game board. Each player in turn rolls the die and moves their marker along the board. They may go forward or backwards or follow any branch of the board they wish, as long as they only go one direction within a turn. This means that you can go forward or backward, but only forward or only backward in a single turn. When a player lands on a space that has a basket on it, they pick up a Game Card and read it out loud (if they cannot read it, someone else can read it for them). Then they put their donation (1 token) into the basket and their turn is over. The first player to donate all their tithing money wins.



Snacks:

Get a round cracker and spread peanut butter on it. Cover with another cracker and you have edible money.

Little Blots of Faith- Baby Moses Craft
This is a fun little craft where children can use their hand prints to make some bushy covering for baby Moses. Materials are minimal, and children of all ages can participate. Let children color baby Moses with crayons, pressing hard. Then with watercolors allow them to paint over the picture to fill in the river. Then trace their hands on green construction paper and cut out to make the reeds. Glue the bottom of the handprints over the basket, so they can peek in on Baby Moses.

Introduce game: What was the name of the baby that was put in a basket and sent down the Nile by his mother? Who found Moses?


Who Has Baby Moses?

Need: Small object to be baby Moses (example: clothes pin).

Directions: The children sit in a circle close together. The child who is “It” stands away from the circle and hides their eyes while baby Moses is passed around. When “It” says "STOP!", the child holding baby Moses hides it (under their leg, up their sleeve, etc.). The child who is “It” guesses who has baby Moses. The child who had baby Moses is now “It”.

Moses in the Bulrushes File Folder Game: The players spin the spinner and follow the directions. If the player spins “Leader’s Spot”, they get to move their marker to where the leader is and share that spot. The first player to the princess wins.
