By Greg Lewis- Did the Illinois Win Sew Up the Nomination for Mitt?

(Disclaimer- Susan) I have never insisted our contributors or guest bloggers match my opinions with theirs in order to have their work published on Wake up America. Mr. Lewis counters my arguments against Mitt Romney with his arguments and provides a little balance to the GOP nomination fight by representing a different opinion than I hold and I thank Mr. Lewis for doing so.

Did the Illinois Win Sew Up the Nomination for Mitt?

If Romney’s victory in the Illinois Republican primary isn’t enough to silence his Republican critics, then they need to take off their own ideological blinders and wake up to reality. Here’s what needs to happen and why.

First, Romney’s Republican critics need to stop whining about how “unfair” it is that Romney has so much money it’s impossible for Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich to compete with him. That what-just-happened? tone of voice sounds too much like something you might hear out of David Axelrod or Michelle Obama or the president himself.

What the hell do they think contemporary politics is all about, anyway? There’s nothing wrong with money. The fact that successful people make a lot of it and want to elect politicians who (in most cases) agree with their point of view only makes sense. The fact that Santorum and Gingrich don’t have any reflects the fact that the people who fund political candidates sense there’s something missing in the candidacies of these two. Unlike the current administration, which is willing to blow billions on doomed-to-fail green energy projects that line their supporters’ pockets, people who compete economically in the real world and aren’t squandering other people’s cash aren’t ready to waste their money on cranky curmudgeons like Gingrich or schoolboys like Santorum. Folks in the know also realize that we’ve got to unseat Obama and that Mitt is the only candidate who’s got the money and the organization and the ability to get the message out to do so. Santorum couldn’t even get enough signatures to get on the ballot in ten Illinois voting districts, and Romney let him off the hook by not challenging his right to be on the ballot in about a dozen others. Otherwise, Santorum might not have picked up even the few delegates he did.

Second, they need to stop carping about Mitt’s mistakes. Sure, most conservatives aren’t thrilled with RomneyCare in Massachusachusetts — I know how to spell it, I just don’t know when to stop — but that isn’t even going to be an issue in the 2012 presidential election. Odds are that the Supreme Court is going to strike down the legislation, and if somehow it doesn’t, Romney’s promise to repeal it by executive order on day one of his presidency will finally be heard by a majority of conservative and moderate Americans, most likely during a debate between Obama and Romney, if Obama has the stones even to take the stage. I can’t wait to see the Dweeb-in-Chief face Romney when he (Obama) hasn’t got a teleprompter to tell him what he should be saying. Romney will wipe the floor with him. I’m not saying that Newt wouldn’t clobber the president in a one-on-one debate, but with victory at hand he might just start to talk about growing tomatoes in space. So enough with the criticism of Mitt’s medical miscue and other apparent shortcomings. They’re ancient history and easily countered.

Third, it’s not about delegate count. The networks want you to believe that, because otherwise they don’t have any stories to hype regarding the Republican Party primary. Should Newt Drop Out and Assign His Delegates to Santorum? Did Rick Really Say, “Gee, Wally, I Think They Should Speak English in Puerto Rico If They Want to Be Americans!” The hype is fatuous at best, mind-numbing at least, not worth paying any attention to in the final analysis. The delegate count is a done deal, and it’s time to get on with the job of ousting Obama.

Which segues into number four, how Romney is going to defeat Obama. You know, Mitt hit a homerun with his Illinois victory speech. (Full text here.) You know that because it was roundly attacked by the contemporary Pravda corps. The speech was really a tune-up for what he’ll be focusing on in the presidential campaign. Romney touched on themes such as “economic freedom,” his 25 years as a businessman who created “thousands of jobs” that “helped families buy their first homes, put kids through school, live better lives, dream a little bigger,” the fact that “[y]ou can’t learn that teaching Constitutional law” or “as a community organizer.” He pointed out that “this President just doesn’t understand the genius of America’s economy — or the secret of our success.”

He talked about the fact that the current administration has, for three years, “been engaged in an assault on our freedom,” especially our economic freedom, by its energy policy and by its incursions into the daily lives of our citizens. He pointed out that if this administration’s policies had been in effect during the last century plus, none of the scientific, infrastructure, and business breakthroughs would have been able to be brought to fruition because that legislation, inimical to free enterprise and creative thought, would have nipped them in the bud.

The speech was presidential, because the Romney campaign recognizes that that’s the stage we’re moving into as of Tuesday’s Illinois primary. The speech also contains the message that Republicans need to focus on. We’ve endured enough intra-party squabbling. We need to understand who can best articulate the message, and we need to get down to consolidating the support for that candidate.

Romney will inundate Obama in the 2012 election.

He’ll win in a landslide.

And he’ll carry enough Republican senatorial candidates in on his coattails to create a situation in which we can rapidly grow our way out of the political, economic, and ideological morass in which Obama’s policies have trapped us.
