Stolen Art Watch, Forget Thomas Crown, Bill Reid Thieves are Cultural Assassins !!

The thieves who broke into a B.C. museum last week and walked off with $2 million in gold artworks wore gas masks and used bear spray, CBC News has learned.

The brazen burglary at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia took place Friday night while the lone security guard was out having a cigarette, museum director Anthony Shelton said.

The take included 12 artistic treasures fashioned in gold by the late Haida artist Bill Reid.

Four hours before the theft occurred, Shelton said, several key surveillance cameras went offline without explanation.

"The security cameras seem to have been working," Shelton said, "and this is just a couple of them. But it seems that they hadn't been recording."

An electronic alarm alerting campus security, responsible for patrols at the museum, was tripped when the cameras stopped recording, but it appears nothing was done about the problem, Shelton said.

There was only one guard at the museum Friday night, and about the same time he left for his smoke break, the thieves moved in wearing gas masks, Shelton said. The burglars then doused the interior of the museum with a powerful bear repellent.

Electronic recordings confirm both audible and silent alarms were functioning at the time, Shelton said. The bear spray would have immobilized anyone who tried to stop the thieves, but it seems no one did.

The guard did not report a problem and the theft was not discovered until the shift change for security guards at 9 a.m. Saturday, Shelton told CBC News.

Shelton said the heist was well organized: three Mexican Zapotec Indian gold-coloured necklaces, which were found despite being hidden in drawers, were the first items taken.

Next came the glass case containing Reid's gold pieces. A dozen items were scooped up, including the famous Golden Box.

The appraised value of all the items is about $2 million, though experts say Reid's pieces are virtually priceless.

Shelton told CBC News he believes the well-organized and professional thieves cased the museum before the break-in. He said he wasn’t sure whether they were only looking for gold, as almost all the gold pieces on display were taken, or whether they were filling a specific order from an international art collector.

Shelton acknowledged police have been questioning staff, but he denied there is any evidence to suggest the burglary was an inside job.

Interpol called into the investigation
Shelton said the museum has been circulating photographs of the stolen work to art magazines and journals, in addition to offering a $50,000 reward. Interpol, the world's largest police agency, has also been called into the investigation.

Reid is considered one of Canada's most important 20th-century artists. Four of his works can be seen on the Canadian $20 bill.

The Victoria-born artisan was trained as a goldsmith and worked in sculpture, carvings and jewelry — all reflecting traditional Northwest Coast native culture. Reid's father was Scottish-German and his mother was Haida.

In his 20s, Reid began a career as a radio announcer and eventually ended up at the CBC in Toronto in 1948, where he discovered his jewelry-making skills while taking a college course.

In 1951, upon returning to Vancouver, Reid explored and expanded his jewelry-making business while continuing to work for the CBC. It was the start of an acclaimed career as a world-renowned artist. He died in 1998.

Memo to thieves: "Cultural Assassins"

Do yourselves a favour and contact Toronto Lawyer Michael Morse, or Dennis Morris, the lawyer who recovered the Thompson Ivories, they will be able to organise the safe return of the Bill Reid items before this whole thing gets out of hand.

Gas Masks and Bear spray, OK professional approach, therefore, make sure the Bill Reid icons are cared for well.

The world and his wife are looking for these Bill Reid Icons and the best thing is they be placed in the safe hands of a lawyer, Morse or Morris, even during negotiations, that way other thieves will not be able to steal them off the original thieves.

As much as the Canadian people are outraged by this theft, the Canadian people can be counted on to forgive the thieves if the Bill Reid icons are quickly returned un-damaged.

Ok I am addicted now to this fun craft

I can't stop myself. I am loving the look of this and the many techniques you can use to achive differant looks. I even did one for my mom and she is loving it. What is so much fun is never knowing exactly what the item is going to look like untill you wash it. So actually no two look alike which makes each one a one of a kind.
Now the one with the dragon fly's and light spots is a technique called sun painting. Now this one is a first attempt so hopeing to get better at this

I'm Officially a Mom to a Teenager!

I still can't believe it but today Connor is 13!

My first born cutie has officially become a teenager. I'm not sure I am really ready to accept that he is no longer my little guy..that he's closer to becoming a young man now than I realized. Gone are the days of playing with his trains, trains and more trains. Now he's onto designing digital cartoon animations, playing with his new Xbox 360 and hanging out with his friends.

It wouldn't be a birthday though if I didn't take a small trip down memory lane. Given this is such a big birthday..I decided to go back to the days when he was little..I miss that! Here's my sweetie! (to see larger..click on the pics and use your back arrow to return to the blog)

How cute is this kid!!?

Celebrating his 1st Birthday!

I had this costume made for him by my High School Home Ec teacher. All three kids wore it! He of course was so cute!

Pictures from Connor's 4th and Haley's 2nd party.

Connor's 5th birthday..
Little baseball player!

and now...last day of school on Friday..

this weekend at a carnival..

and last night getting his presents..

He's an amazing kid! So smart and talented! Loves the color orange, very artistic, developing his own style, almost ready to use a razor(OMG!), likes girls..and girls with long hair that are smart..according to him, gets along great with Haley, still doesn't care for his little brother, can be very helpful when asked..and is just a great kid!

Happy 13th Birthday Connor!

Love,

Mom

Stolen Art Watch, Michael Morse can Crack the Code, Get Bill Reid Icons returned !!

Theft of Bill Reid art not random, curator says

The curator of the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia says the theft on Saturday of a dozen pieces of art by Haida artist Bill Reid was not random.

Bill McLennan says the thieves knew what they wanted and they brought in the equipment needed to break into the high security cases that held the works of art.

He says his worst fear is that whoever took the pieces could melt them down for the gold.

Police refuse to say how the thieves got into the building, or if there is any video surveillance, but they say descriptions of the stolen items are being circulated to police agencies around the world through Interpol.

In addition to the Bill Reid pieces -- which are being called "priceless'' -- several Mexican gold necklaces were also stolen.

On Monday, Canadian Press reported that UBC and the Museum are jointly offering a $50,000 reward for the return of the works, which have a total value of about $2 million.

Reid's widow, Martine, is said to be distressed by the theft and hopes a reward is offered to get the works of art back.

Reid is considered to be one of Canada's most important artists of the 20th century.

He was trained as a goldsmith and worked in sculpture, carvings, jewelry and painting. His work reflected traditional Northwest Coast native art.

Reid died in 1998.
Art Hostage comments:

Sorry for the delay in posting about this theft but I have been consulting contacts in Canada.

First of all the way to recover the stolen Bill Reid artworks is a method used last year to recover the iconic set of medals stolen in New Zealand, see link:

However distasteful the services of an underworld lawyer is crucial.

Now the man for this job in Canada is Michael Morse who I posted a story about see link:

All the names are provided in the story above so get to it !!!

If authorities play their cards right the Bill Reid items can be back home sooner rather than later.

more later....................

Journalling with Collage

At the beginning of this year, I made Vision Cards to express my business goals in a visual way. They sit on my desk and inspire me daily. They are such a joy to make that I've continued to explore other possibilities . I've made inspiration cards for others (and am considering this as an Etsy product) and now am throwing myself into a another daily project - creating a collage card a day.

It's been fun to watch the trends in my moods and interests. Each day I choose the images very intuitively, grabbing whatever captures my attention or imagination and seeing how it all come together. Through the process, I've started to see my collection of collage cards as a visual journal and am now collecting notes about my day on the flip side of the card.

The best part of this visual journal is that it guarantees me a little creative outlet each and every day.

After 86 marble stones I like it

I am still tie dying. I wondered how it work work to add marbles underneath my dress. What would it look like. Would I like it or trash it. It took 86 glass stones to do the front and back of this dress. A little time consuming to say the least. I only did the bottom leaving the elastic top without the stones. After 15 hours of soaking in the dye it was time to get all of these marbles out another time consuming process. But I have to say I like it and will be doing this process again.

Project 365 ~ Week 19

Well, it's been a quiet posting week here at Starshyne Productions. I've been focused on home and clearing. On our Saturday morning adventure, Justin and I bought these fun coasters. Justin picked the pictures.

Decluttering and cleaning in the kitchen.

Victoria Day Monday we made a delicious frittata with leeks, tomato and goat cheese. Delish.

Have you ever noticed that spice jars aren't big enough? You always end up with your pretty little jar and then bags of spices that have to be stored somewhere else. No more! After years of searching we found these wonderful jars and now have the joy of looking at all the pretty colours too. Bliss.

Where I teach Nia they painted their utility box.

Shannon, the Movie Moxie, is covering the Inside Out Festival and we went to see Derek and Razzle Dazzle. In between the movies we enjoyed the beauty of Victoria College at U of T and took some photos.

Project 365 is my attempt to capture a year in my life through a photograph a day. On Saturday's I'll post the week's pics. At the end of the year, I'll create a video of all these precious moments. Feel free to participate at any time. Yours can be Project 347 or Project 292. It's up to you.

Use Your Stuff

You know I've been thinking about this more and more. The use your stuff before you buy more thing. It applies to many areas of my life. Not just with the one I think of often..scrapbooking. But also to your food, snacks, toys, clothes etc etc. I have been working on getting things out and together for our annual garage sale and this thought really comes to mind. The less is more theory really starts to ring through my head when I see all the silly things I am purging for the sale. Things that at one time I thought were important to have that now I see as a waste of money. Not very good. So I really need to try to focus more on the less is more. And use my supplies I have before seeking out more. It's such a burden we feel to always have the latest, newest..but in reality must we? I don't think we always do!

So along those lines of use your stuff..I had a small pile of papers lying on my table in my room and decided to work with those and nothing else. They weren't used together before but were just piled together after other projects with them were completed. I decided to challenge myself to use what I had literally right in front of me! Here's the card:

I used a really cute October Afternoon stamp and added the Amuse Art "A Little Birdie" stamp. Some Stickles and Perfect Pearls add touches of glitter to the bird and branch. My fun Fiskars Threading Water punch makes the adorable scallop edge and Bo Bunny papers and ribbon finish it off. Oh and the inside says.."that it's your birthday!" Simple, sweet and I used my stuff!!! Even better!

Since it seems I am often posting movie thoughts..I did get to watch The Golden Compass this weekend.

Let me first say that I did jump the gun and read the books before the movie. I realize now in doing that I've set myself up for a bit of disappointment. By doing that I've read all the wonderful details forgetting that most movies can never go as far as a book can. And I really enjoyed the books. I do realize that there are some issues regarding the topic..but to me..what book doesn't normally have a topic some might disagree with. It's a book. About the movie..I did like it..but it lacked so much info..that for Scott I had to fill him in on all sorts of things so that he understood why things were happening. They also changed the order around of some of the events which bugs me too. The ending left you hanging..Scott yelled out too aaahhh. He said it was like a Lord of the Rings ending..leaving you waiting for the next. And maybe so given there are three books. I guess it was just not quite as I hope..and well I'm not a huge fan of Nicole Kidman. So..it's a C+ for me. Maybe if Daniel Craig would have had a bigger part..I'd have thought it deserving of a B-!LOL

Last today...a few weeks ago I kicked the gears going for my summer reading. Last summer I read almost 40 books I believe. I'll have to check as I kept the library receipts. But I've already read 5 with a really good one..John Grisham's "The Appeal" rising to the top as a great read! I so love him!

The next book I just started is the "Book of the Dead" by Patricia Cornwell..love her too! Love that CSI type of style book and she does it well along with Kathy Reichs! Then next on the list..Eat, Pray Love and some other fun light books that I will share as I get to them! We'll see how many I can read this summer! I'm going for 50!

Happy Wednesday..American Idol Season Finale! Go David Cook..I think you are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And are my Idol regardless of what happens tonight!

If you don't like the color change it

Now I like white but don't wear it that much for fear of getting something on it and then it is there till you get home sticking out like a sore thumb. Now my hubby and I as well as my son's love the look of tie dye so why not? I have a long pretty white skirt that I bought a Old Navy a couple of years ago and have not wore this skirt yet. That's right just been hanging in my closet so I wouldn't get anything on it. Well right now it is in a plastic bag with dye all over it. Now I can't wash it out till in the morning but in the mean time I can share the other two dresses that I tie dyed over the past couple of days and a cool shirt for hubby. Now I am not a pro at this by no means I just like playing.
